How sessions & the word ladder work
Every session is the same size: 10 new words, up to 10 review words, and 5 throwbacks from older batches, about 25 items, never more. Missed words retry before the session ends.
On review words you choose your lane: 👁 Flip it (just see the definition; keeps the word fresh, no climb) · 🎯 Quiz me (multiple choice; climbs the ladder, up to solid) · ✍️ Write it (define it yourself; the only road to mastered, max 5 write-ins per session so it never gets overwhelming).
| Stage | How a word climbs |
|---|---|
| 0 · new | Meet the word: definition, examples, traps to avoid |
| 1 · seen | Multiple choice: pick the right definition |
| 2 · recognized | Reverse: see a definition, pick the word |
| 3 · climbing | Harder multiple choice: the word in a sentence, with look-alike traps |
| 4 · solid | Write the definition in your own words. Pass it and the word is mastered |
| 5 · mastered | Occasional maintenance checks, plus an optional ⭐ bonus: use it in a sentence to own it (it turns gold) |
Every 5th session is a Review Day: no new words, just a rapid sweep of everything you’ve learned. That’s where the backlog drains, so regular sessions stay light.
On written answers you rate yourself 1–5 after seeing the full definition and acceptable alternatives: 4–5 = pass, 3 = sort of (returns next session), 1–2 = miss (retries later this session).
