Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about SAT tutoring with Ricardo. Don't see your question? Feel free to reach out directly.
Getting Started
How do I get started with SAT tutoring?
+The first step is to schedule a free 15-20 minute consultation. During this call, we'll discuss your student's current score (or projected score), their goals, timeline, and any specific concerns. I'll assess whether we're a good fit and recommend a package based on their needs. Book your free consultation here.
Do you offer a trial session?
+Yes! You can book a single session at $250 (60 minutes virtual) to see if my teaching style works for your student. If you're not satisfied after the first session, I offer a full refund—no questions asked.
How quickly can we start?
+I typically have availability within 1-2 weeks. However, because I limit myself to 10 students at a time to ensure quality attention, spots can fill quickly during peak seasons (January-May and August-October). It's best to reach out as early as possible.
When should my child start SAT prep?
+Most students begin preparation 3-6 months before their target test date. Starting earlier is always better, as it allows for more gradual improvement and reduces stress. Students typically take the SAT in spring of junior year or fall of senior year.
About Ricardo & Qualifications
What are your qualifications?
+I scored a 99th percentile on the SAT (99th percentile). I hold a B.S. in Biochemistry from UCSB, a Master's in Education from Boston University, and a Master's in Food and Nutrition Policy (with emphasis on behavioral interventions) from Tufts. I'm a licensed Massachusetts teacher and have 12 years of tutoring experience with over 400 students.
Do you work with high needs students?
+Yes, absolutely. I have been trained and have experience with working with students with IEPs, english language learners, and hold current professional certifications including Trauma-Informed Care and Behavioral Health training. Your child's safety is the top priority.
Can parents observe online sessions?
+Yes! Parents are welcome to sit in on Zoom sessions. Many parents appreciate being able to observe their student's progress, especially in the first few sessions. For in-person sessions at your home, parents are always present.
What makes your approach different from big test prep companies?
+Three key differences: (1) You work directly with me—a perfect scorer with advanced teaching credentials—not a rotating cast of college students. (2) Every lesson is 100% customized to your student's diagnostic results and learning style, not a standardized curriculum. (3) My behavioral science background means I teach sustainable study habits and test-taking confidence, not just content.
How Sessions Work
How long are sessions?
+Both virtual and in-person sessions are 60 minutes. I find this duration optimal for maintaining student engagement while covering substantial material.
Can we do longer sessions?
+Yes! While my standard sessions are 60 minutes (both virtual and in-person), I can accommodate longer sessions up to 2 hours if needed. However, I typically recommend keeping sessions to 90 minutes maximum. Beyond that, student focus and retention tend to drop significantly. Quality over quantity—focused, engaged learning in shorter sessions is more effective than marathon sessions where attention wanes.
How often should my child meet with you?
+Most students meet 1-2 times per week, depending on their timeline and availability. Meeting twice per week accelerates progress, while once per week works well for students with longer preparation timelines (4+ months).
What platform do you use for online tutoring?
+I use Zoom for all online sessions. It's user-friendly, secure, and allows for screen sharing so we can work through problems together in real time. I can also record sessions upon request so students can review them later.
Where do you meet for in-person sessions?
+I'm flexible! I can meet at your home (most common), local libraries, or other convenient public spaces in the Greater Boston area. We'll discuss the best arrangement during your consultation.
What materials do students need?
+I provide digital materials and practice tests. Students should have access to official College Board SAT practice tests (free online or in book form) and a scientific or graphing calculator. I'll recommend specific books if needed, typically costing $20-30 total.
What happens between sessions?
+Students complete assigned practice work from official College Board materials. They have 24/7 access to me via email—if they get stuck, I respond within 24 hours (usually much faster) and often provide video walkthroughs of difficult problems. I also send daily check-ins to keep students accountable and motivated.
Results & Expectations
What kind of score improvement can we expect?
+My students average 200-400 point improvements over 8-12 weeks of consistent work. However, results vary based on starting score, effort level, and time commitment. Students who complete all assigned practice and attend sessions regularly see the best results. I've had students improve by as much as 300 points, and even smaller improvements of 100-150 points can dramatically improve college admissions and scholarship opportunities.
How long does it take to see results?
+Most students see measurable improvement within 3-4 weeks of consistent work. However, sustained, significant improvement typically requires 8-16 weeks. The SAT tests critical thinking skills that take time to develop—cramming for 2 weeks before the test rarely works.
Do you guarantee score improvements?
+I guarantee that if students follow my study plan and complete all assigned work, they will see measurable improvement. However, no ethical tutor can guarantee specific point increases because so many factors affect performance (test anxiety, sleep, focus on test day, etc.). What I can guarantee is a proven methodology, expert instruction, and comprehensive support.
What if my child's scores don't improve?
+This is extremely rare when students follow the program consistently. If a student isn't improving, we'll have an honest conversation about what's not working—whether it's the study approach, time commitment, external factors, or test anxiety. I'll adjust the approach accordingly. If you're not seeing any progress after 4 sessions, we can discuss options including a partial refund.
My child struggles with test anxiety. Can you help with that?
+Yes! This is one of my specialties. With training in trauma-informed care and behavioral interventions, I work with students on stress management techniques, time management strategies, and building confidence through incremental successes. Test anxiety is addressable with the right approach.
Scheduling & Logistics
How flexible is your schedule?
+Very flexible! I offer sessions evenings and weekends to accommodate busy student schedules. We'll find times that work consistently for your family during the consultation.
What's your cancellation policy?
+I require 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged unless there's a genuine emergency (illness, family emergency, etc.). I'm reasonable and accommodating when legitimate situations arise.
Do unused sessions expire?
+Yes, packages expire 6 months from the date of purchase. This ensures students maintain momentum and consistency, which is essential for score improvement.
Can we pause or extend a package?
+Yes, in certain circumstances (extended illness, family emergencies, etc.) we can pause or extend packages. This is handled on a case-by-case basis—just communicate with me and we'll work something out.
Pricing & Payment
How much does tutoring cost?
+Test Prep (SAT/ACT): Single sessions are $250/hour virtual. When you purchase a package (4+ sessions), the rate drops to $200/session. Packages range from $800 (4 sessions) to $6,400 (32 sessions). In-person sessions in Greater Boston are $400/hour. Academic Tutoring: $175/session or $1,500 for 10 sessions (virtual only). All packages include 24/7 support, daily check-ins, video walkthroughs, and materials. View complete pricing here.
Do you offer payment plans?
+For larger packages (16+ sessions), I can arrange payment plans on a case-by-case basis. Please discuss this during your consultation call.
What payment methods do you accept?
+I accept all major credit/debit cards via Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover), Zelle, and personal checks. Payment for packages is due before the first session. For single sessions, payment is due before each session.
Is SAT tutoring tax deductible?
+Generally, SAT tutoring is not tax deductible as it's considered preparation for higher education, not remedial education. However, I'm not a tax professional—please consult your accountant for specific advice regarding your situation.
Other Common Questions
Do you tutor the ACT as well?
+Yes! While SAT is my primary focus, I also tutor the ACT. My approach and pricing structure are the same. During your consultation, we can discuss whether the SAT or ACT is a better fit for your student.
My child is a sophomore. Is it too early to start?
+Not at all! Sophomore year is an excellent time to begin building foundational skills, especially for students who struggle with reading comprehension or math concepts. Starting early reduces pressure and allows for more gradual, sustainable improvement.
My child is a senior with a test in 4 weeks. Can you help?
+Yes, though expectations need to be realistic. With only 4 weeks, we focus on high-yield strategies and the specific areas where quick improvement is possible. Larger score jumps typically require more time. Contact me to discuss your specific situation.
Do you help with SAT essay prep?
+As of 2021, the SAT essay has been discontinued by College Board. However, if you're taking an older format or need help with college application essays, I can assist with that as well.
Can you help with college application strategy too?
+While my primary expertise is SAT prep, I'm happy to provide general guidance on college applications, essay topics, and school selection during our sessions. However, for comprehensive application support, I recommend working with a dedicated college counselor.
How are you different from using Khan Academy for free?
+Khan Academy is an excellent free resource that I actually recommend students use! However, self-guided prep only works for highly motivated, self-directed students. Most students benefit enormously from personalized instruction, accountability, strategic error analysis, and having an expert identify their specific weaknesses. I help students use resources like Khan Academy more effectively.
